Mumtaz: I still say wow to beauty

Be it career or marriage, spirituality helps you believe in yourself. Isn't that how you conquer the world? Never be afraid of obstacles. Don't let anyone or anything bother you. My family has been a pillar of strength, my sister, my two daughters and my husband.

When I was suffering from cancer, there were days, I'd be low, I'd think of the time when life was only sunshine. You have to keep the faith alive. Don't indulge in self-pity. And I never detached myself from the world. I travel, I see the world with excitement, marvel. I still say ‘wow' to beautiful things.

I've kept alive my childlike innocence. I don't let anything or anyone dampen my zest for life. Now, that's very important.

So, I make sure, I live everyday to the full.

Thanks to a mother who wouldn't let him walk away from football, Mike Price will be heading to East Carolina University on a football scholarship in 2009.

I didn't think it (scholarship) was going to come so soon, Price said. I thought I'd have to wait until the (2008) season started.

But I had been down there on a couple of (unofficial) visits. I walked around campus, talked to the coaches and got to know the program a little bit. I just liked everything about it.

Articles Of Faith: Remember the values of independence and mercy

Spirituality or faith is personal, but it isn't private. If we are serious about growing to be more authentic and faithful people, we need others.

We need the larger tradition that most congregations are part of. We need the example and wisdom of others. We need the encouragement of others. And because all of us have a huge capacity for self-deception, we need the reality check others provide.

Other religions accepted while Christianity scoffed at

Because it deals with 'truth' and 'life' and 'spirituality,' it is a religion."

I continued pondering how some religions are accepted when my Christian beliefs are often scoffed at.

One of the last assignments my son had in literature was analyzing a poem. I like to know what he's studying, so I went online to read the poem. In an effort to understand what I was reading, I Googled the author's name to learn about her. The author was influenced by Zen Buddhism, so I did some research on that as well. I found a classroom lesson from a school in New Jersey with these interesting words: "The end product will be a multimedia presentation showcasing these materials and displaying the students' knowledge of Zen principles."

Wow! I remember when my son wrote a poem in first grade about his friend, Jesus, and was admonished by his teacher.

Pop Culture: Finding Meaning and Purpose in the Neighborhood

Pascal Boyer suggests that humans are created to have a spirituality, so whether we're religionists or atheists, we all strive toward the transcendent. Religionists tend to seek their source for meaning in a Transcendent reality (God), while atheists tend to find purpose in a Humanistic trajectory. (Admittedly, this is grossly simplistic, so my apologies to both groups.)

However, these differences are meaningless when it comes to pop culture. When Yael Naim's "New Soul" introduces the new MacBook Air, I hear a deeply religious message and my thoughts bounce back and forth from Martin Buber to Paul Tillich to Teilhard de Chardin—theologians who looked at life from a faith perspective. Others could be thinking of humanity in the cosmic scope of things, and recall the writings of Arthur Clarke, Isaac Asimov or Robert Heinlein—authors who looked at the world from a humanistic perspective.

Amy Winehouse's Father: 'Blake Fielder-Civil Can Be Positive

Mitch Winehouse, the father of Amy Winehouse, says his daughter's husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, can still have a "positive influence" on the singer. Fielder-Civil was sentenced to 27 months behind bars earlier this week for assaulting a pub landlord and attempting to pervert the course of justice. Winehouse's husband has already served nine months of his sentence on remand and could be free in the next five months. Speaking this morning at the unveiling of his daughter's waxwork, Mr Winehouse said: "If Blake comes out of prison and proves to be a positive influence on Amy, then they will have a fantastic life, and he will make his parents very proud. "The other option is just not tenable. I don't know if the extra five or six months he has to spend in prison will make a difference, I just don't know." Mr Winehouse also said that his daughter was "doing really well" on a drug replacement program and admitted that she was keen to have children.

Faith and the Democratic Party

The paper states that Herbert Daughtry's ministry has combined black liberation theology with spirituality, and in the fellowship hall a banner touting reparations for slavery said "They Owe Us." Daughtry says she and her siblings were raised “to believe that we would only experience success — success in the sense of contentment, peace — to the extent that we were faithful to the covenant made between our great-great-grandfather and God." The covenant, her father told me, is “to struggle with and for the people, to make life better for the human family."

One paragraph from the article says:

In her positions as Dean's top aid and the convention's top official, Daughtry, who is 44 years old, is leading the Democratic Party's new mission to make religious believers — particularly ardent Christian believers — view the party and its candidates as receptive to, and often impelled by, the dictates of faith.

Stay positive and beat the credit crunch

And I think for us all as leaders what we need to be doing is to be confident and positive and enthusiastic about the future.

That doesn't mean that we're being dishonest or unrealistic, but recognising that yes, the economy is in a downturn but that what we have to do is learn from it and recognise that when you go through difficult times, that you can grow from adversity and we can become more efficient as a result of adversity.

What companies typically do in a recession is cut out unnecessary costs and they become more efficient.

So one of the things that's going to happen is that we are going to become more efficient and more effective and that's something to be pleased about, to be confident about. the concerns is that because of this financial downturn, that ordinary families are going to suffer and of course everybody suffers in a recession, but what we need to do is limit the scope of that recession by not talking ourselves into a worse and worse state.

‘Theology in Life’

Majors will go on to take upper-level courses in areas including sacramental theology, the New Testament, and Catholic spirituality. The capstone for the major program, Fletcher explained, will be a seminar relating theology to an area of life. “Someone who's doing science education and theology for example would do a project on, say, the theology of stewardship and environmental science," she said. A student double-majoring in math and theology, she continued, could study the problem of knowledge.

“You start with the questions people have about life, and then, ‘What are the answers? Why would you take a Catholic position?’" said Fletcher.

This generation of undergraduates is, both by empirical and anecdotal accounts, acutely interested in the so-called “big questions." A survey of 112,000 freshmen conducted by University of California at Los Angeles researchers in 2004 found, for instance, that 74 percent of first-year students discuss the meaning of life with friends, and 76 percent search for life's purpose.

Jay-Z's poor motivation

Jay-Z says being poor motivated him to succeed. The rapper - who is married to former Destiny's Child singer Beyonce Knowles - revealed his rise to stardom stems from a desire to escape from his hometown of Brooklyn, New York.

He said: "Being broke is a great motivator. Home was like the cliche of rough. When I was nine I saw someone shot for the first time." Jay-Z, who is set to play at the Glastonbury music festival on Saturday, also revealed his taste in music, saying his favourite bands include British group Coldplay - whose new album 'Viva La Vida Or Death and All His Friends' recently topped the US album charts.

Jay-Z said: "My favourite music is heartfelt music, I don't believe in the separation of music. I listen to Coldplay, 50 Cent and Kanye West." Coldplay frontman Chris Martin has been a close friend of the rapper for many years and attended his recent New York wedding along with his wife Gwyneth Paltrow.

Tech uses national rankings, attention as motivation for hard work

We've used it as motivation. OK, we're ranked in the top 10; we've got to do our best.' Work hard, make sure we stay in the top 10 because you can lose your first game and automatically you're out of it.''

The reasons many expect more from Tech are obvious: All but four starters and a kicker are back from a 9-4 team that won the Gator Bowl - the program's first January bowl victory in 54 years.

Even Tech coach Mike Leach, who says he always expects to win every game, welcomes the wide-scale acknowledgment.

"I think it's good,'' said Leach, who begins his ninth season at Tech with a 65-37 overall record. "It's pleasing because it's kind of recognition for the efforts of a lot of coaches that have been at Tech, for the institution and for a lot of players.

24-07-2008: Vizeum’s subconscious approach pays off

Research shows that the Motivation to Media subconscious approach can achieve up to 24% stronger connection with consumers," he said.

Miller said Vizeum Malaysia had invested more than RM300,000 for Motivation to Media, a research database of information pertaining to brands, media and consumers derived from a survey of 2,000 local respondents. Based on the Censydiam Model, a marketing tool developed by diagnostic qualitative research company Censydiam, the system “puts the science behind a creative buy", he said.

The database is used to understand how personalities of different brands are correlated within the category, and Vizeum have taken that information a step further into media delivery, said Miller, adding that Motivation to Media involves segmenting brands into 16 different categories or motivations, and adapting media strategies to each brand personality accordingly.

Church observers ask: Where have all the good men gone

Perhaps indicative of women's sense of spirituality, 41 percent of women said they have set specific spiritual goals that they hope to accomplish in the coming year or two. Only 29 percent of men have identified such spiritual goals."Women, more often than not, take the lead role in the spiritual life of the family," said George Barna, president of the research group. "Women typically emerge as the primary -- or only -- spiritual mentor and role model for family members. And that puts a tremendous burden on wives and mothers." Pam Durso, associate executive director of the Baptist History and Heritage Society, agrees that women do play a major role in families as spiritual mentors. "One aspect of that is that mothers generally are the ones who do the scheduling of events and the planning of activities, including church attendance and church-related programs."But that’s nothing new, Durso argues.

IT admins should also think green

They have the potential to reduce power consumption even further than laptops.

[ For more on purchasing green IT desktop hardware, please read "Are green IT premiums worth the cost?" For more on the green benefits of thin clients, please read "Thinking green? Think thin." ]

Now suppose after refreshing your users' desktop systems, you realize it's time to deploy tools for easier backup and system patching. Sounds like a potentially sound investment for the sake of security and business continuity. But what if you also pause to, yep, think green again. You might follow the example of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools: In addition to purchasing licenses for BigFix asset and patch-management software, the district paid a bit extra ($2 per license) for the BigFix PC power management component, which is designed to put machines into low-power idle states when they're not being used, thus cutting energy waste.

Motivation seminar leaves one wondering, lighter in the wallet

I'm planning to write one of those self-help, motivational books one of these days. That is, if I can get up for it. I almost got around to it yesterday, but I got invited to a chili feed at the last moment.

If you are ever motivated enough to spend 50 cents on the local daily newspaper, you can see a huge ad in there for an all-day seminar coming in late August called “Get Motivated!"

I did a rough count and found that the sprawling full-page ad contains more than 18 exclamation points. By contrast, one of the biggest motivational books of them all – the King James version of the Bible – contains none. I'm not sure what that means, but thought I'd mention it.

The “Get Motivated!" seminar offers “Inspiration! “Career Skills!" and “Wealth-Building!" But before you can learn how to build wealth, you have to part with some of it first.

The Big Dogz on Business: Many different factors can make job exciting

Motivation is personal. Following the management principle of customization, the effective manager customizes the motivation factors for each individual. For some people, the job itself is a motivating factor. This motivation factor is known as job enrichment.

What is job enrichment?

Job enrichment is the process of expanding the task that an individual performs at work. It includes structuring a job so that it is more stimulating through variety of actions, visibility of results to both the person and others, decision-making opportunities and feedback.

Does job enrichment really work?

Yes. In some situations, it works as well as any other motivation factor. In job-enrichment studies, the results are mixed. I believe a key factor in the results is how important job enrichment is to a particular individual.

Comment: Re-thinking the Iranian threat —Robert Skidelsky

Would it be a great disaster if Iran had nuclear weapons? As a habitual contrarian, I pose the question because almost everyone seems to believe that it would, and that it must be prevented at all costs. But is that true?

John Bolton, the former United States Ambassador to the United Nations, said in April that if the choice is [Iran] continuing [towards a nuclear bomb] or the use of force, I think you're at a Hitler marching into the Rhineland point. Bush, too, has compared Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Hitler.

But these so-called statesmen never consider what might have happened had Germany and Britain both had nuclear weapons in 1939. Would Hitler, wicked as he was, have gone to war had he faced an assured threat of total destruction? Have we forgotten all about the theory of deterrence?

Of course, the world would be safer if Iran did not have nuclear weapons, not because it is a rogue state, but because any spread of nuclear weapons is likely to make the world more dangerous.

Staff motivation: Holding deeper conversations can help drive

After a year-long programme, Skandia has tracked and measured a 50% average increase in motivation in those teams where managers have focused specifically on building relationships with their people. For those who are always looking for proof that investment in the soft stuff makes any difference, this is pretty compelling data.

So what has Skandia been doing that has made such a difference? The answer is that it has been training managers to have very different sorts of conversations with their staff. The defining characteristic of such conversations is that managers don't start by focusing on the result that is required but rather on how the team member concerned can be switched on so that they take pride in their job and feel inspired about their work.

Of course, most managers know that successful business depends to a great extent on the motivation of their staff to perform, and what this approach supplies is a framework that helps them tap into people's engagement.

EDITORIAL: Upcountry basketball teams need motivation

BASKETBALL fans in Dar es Salaam and the rest of the country had every reason to feel proud of the regional team, popularly known as ’Dream Team’, as it won the East African Inter-cities tournament held at the National Indoor Stadium in the city at the end of last month.

The week-long tournament also involved teams from other East African cities including Arusha, Mbeya, Mwanza, Kampala and Mombasa, some of which featured both men and women squads.

The absence of top sides like Nairobi, who were the tournament’s defending champions, was not really felt as participants put up impressive performances that made the event worth attending.

Dar es Salaam truly need a pat on the back for their achievement in the tournament after suffering a series of heart breaks in past competitions.

Facing the reality of your HIV test results

Even after hospital authorities had told him to go and look for Nevirapine, a drug that is administered to children who are born to HIV positive mothers, because it was out of stock at the hospital then, it did not cross his mind that his wife was HIV positive, probably because he didn't know what the drug was used for. He went to a number of pharmacies to buy this restricted drug all the while unaware that he was buying it to save his child from contracting the HIV virus.

Hospital staff did abide by the confidentiality clause that they are governed by in the medical code of conduct. The lady had told them never to inform her husband that she was HIV positive and why he was looking for the drug. Disclosing a person's HIV status can be a breach of one's rights to confidentiality but medical personnel can encourage someone to disclose their status to their partner or have someone encourage their partner to go for testing.

It is a terrible intrusion into the rights of the individual and his freedom of religion and freedom of inner spirituality to tell him how to think intuitively, develop wisdom, and find an ultimate purpose in his life.-

What we worship and how we worship is our own personal business. And men and women are both capable of this to a large degree, even if women are a bit better at it. Furthermore the soul is said to be androgynous or double-sexed and great soul-power can easily transcend a mere biological apparatus like a body. There have always been both men and women who can see past their biological programming.-

I was brought up to be a Catholic. Catholicism is probably the most patriarchal of all religions. It dates back to the time when the Roman Empire fused with Christianity to form the Holy Roman Empire.

NBR Transcripts- July 24, 2008

But thinking about next year and 2010, we have a number of programs under way to improve our revenue production so that we too can overcome higher energy costs. And I would like to see the results of some of those initiatives before we expand aggressively. But the nice thing is, with all the shrinking going on in the market, we have a number of opportunities to expand. We'll just keep our powder dry here for the time being.

YASTINE: Gary, when you talk about increasing revenue, are ticket prices, an increase in ticket prices on that menu, because it sounds like some of the comments you've made elsewhere sort of hint that that is something that the company is contemplating?

KELLY: You know, I just think that's the inevitability that we'll have to find some way to raise revenues.

Motivate staff to deliver the goods

But in June the 37-year-old distribution manager for the construction materials provider Lafarge found he could be fired up to new heights of motivation.

Dargie, who works at Mountsorrel in Leicestershire, had been in his job for almost four years, with 22 staff and responsibility for managing the company’s relationship with haul-iers and subcontractors across the Midlands and eastern England.

Then he was identified as someone with the potential to deliver more and was invited to join the company’s "Jump" two-week development programme in Paris.

The programme, delivered in partnership with Mannaz, a management development consultancy, sought to reenergise key staff, help them to change their workplace style and enable them to consider career options they had not felt capable of before.

Brain Function Has Many Facets

One important consideration in evaluation of human behavior is the concept of spirituality. Every human group has some concept of this nature. We do not know how the brain structures this phenomenon, and so, at present, cannot help with a scientific evaluation of it.Our present research facilities are increasingly using CT scans, magnetic resonance scans and pet scans to help improve our knowledge. Each of these scans emphasizes a different part of the brain, and they all show that different parts of the human brain are active in different situations. The effects can be modified by drugs, fatigue or anger.Thinking seems to involve several different areas of the brain including the memory sections, but we still are not able to describe the details. There is some suspicion that a single brain cell (a neuron) may be able to handle a single memory.

Methods used by business helping Welsh pupils to think on their feet

Rhydypenau Primary and Christ the King Catholic Primary in Cardiff are the first schools in Wales to officially become Thinking Schools. They have been accredited as one of only a handful of centres of excellence in the UK.

The scheme run by the University of Exeter's Cognitive Education Centre (CEC) encourages schools to incorporate the use of thinking tools from mind maps to thinking hats into all aspects of the curriculum to help pupils become independent learners, promote a love of learning and help lay the foundations for every pupil to become lifelong learners.

The tools have until recently been more commonly used by businesses but headteachers say they are having a positive impact on the way children learn and interact with each other. Being a Thinking School is defined by CEC as "an educational community in which all members share a common commitment to giving regular careful thought to everything that takes place." On a practical level for schools it means that pupils continually develop and demonstrate independent and co-operative learning skills using the skills and strategies they have been taught.

Living the Thinking Life

That book was so readable, even for a mere kid, and the logic was so pristine that it transformed my thinking at all levels. I grew up in a rural farming community, so many of the examples that Darwin used to illustrate his points were familiar. Through his words, his logic, his cautious and carefully-worded arguments, the world was revealed as a vibrant and mysterious place, but despite its seeming chaos, the world was still logical and understandable: it was governed by rules, even though those rules might not be obvious to humans. Inspired, I began asking questions, lots of questions, of the adults around me. Of course, I was ignored, but it wasn't long before I asked the preacher what was the purpose of god since we evolved. Woops.

After being told that I was a stupid little girl who should remain silent until I "knew something" (the precise word used was "shaddup"), I realized that I would never be taken seriously until I had a serious education.

Mariamma Brown.

What is your beauty secret?

I use Witch Hazel and water on a cotton ball as a toner. Its a low costing, natural, and effective toner.

What do you think is the best solution for the current crisis in the oil markets and why?

Well many things have become dependent on oil. The solution to the current oil crisis is not something that can be solved overnight. Big companies have been so extremely occupied with oil and its great revenue, that they avoid developing sources such as solar energy, wind mill energy, and other alternatives that would prevent such a massive scale of oil use.

BC: I spoke earlier in the article about your spirituality. How big a part of your life does spirituality play?

EC: I always put God first in everything I do. He is the one who provides everything I need. Everywhere I go and everything I do, God is there for me. I make mistakes but I ask god for his guidance to help me correct the mistakes. People do not want to be around negative people. I want to show people love and respect everywhere I go so that they will look at Edner Cherry and say that I’m a nice guy. I want to continue to give God praise for everything he has provided for me. I will continue to praise God, win or lose, after a fight. He has given me the opportunity to be a boxer, and he needs thanks for giving me that gift.

BC: Do you find yourself ever asking the Lord for guidance before or during a fight?

EC: Yes, absolutely.

The Power of Self Improvement

"People seldom improve when they have no other model but themselves to copy after." Goldsmith

The subject of my note today is Self Improvement. In discussing this subject I'd love to look at the word KAIZEN. Kaizen is a Japanese management term referring to constant, continuous and never-ending improvement. Anthony Robbins calls the notion CANI that stands for: "Constant And Never Ending Improvement." Kaizen is a way of life. It is constant improvement in every aspect of your life. You have a built-in mechanism to substantiate and to improve. Therefore, ascertaining how to improve your relationship, your knowledge, your attitude, your goals and goal-setting strategies, leadership skills and time management should be your daily responsibility. Experts in the field of human development say overly everything can be improved on by at least ten per cent.

There is no pursuit a good deal more venerable than the pursuit of self-improvement. Self-improvement as aforementioned, begins amongst your born once again spirit, your mind, as you consistently renew it with God's word. Everything is capable of being improved, even if only incrementally. The concept of continuous improvement can literally be applied to every aspect of your customized and professional life. Consistent and constant pursuit of improvement in all cities of your life is indispensable in the attainment of your real potential. Hence improving daily, whether by spending some time exercising, reading, visualizing or forging better relationships, you are making common deposits and evolving toward a desired attainable end.

The personal mark of all but every high achiever and successful people is a daily dedication to improvement in both personal and qualified lives. To be effective, you own to do Times daily and consistently and not haphazardly to advance congruently in the direction of your goals, final purpose and destiny.

It is fundamental to apply the Kaizen or CANI principle on a continuing basis to every component of your life from spiritual to physical, business to family to attain peak performance as you migrate toward your desired end.

Mark Vernon

Or I found myself turning my back on the spirituality that is represented in great religious music and architecture. I did not take it seriously simply because it might imply I was letting religion in again, through the back door.

Then there were the arguments for and against the existence of God. I'd read them all, and came to think that there is no knock-out blow one way or the other. Anyway, proofs never persuade anyone to change their mind. They just bolster the opinions of those whose minds are made up already.

To put it another way, I had become an agnostic. But not just a shrug-of-the-shoulders agnostic. This agnosticism felt more passionate than that. I wanted to ask the big questions, develop a spirituality. I was committed to the search.

It is such a passionate agnosticism that sees science as inspired by wonder, nurturing a piety towards the natural world.

Inner power

MANY of us communicate with ourselves consciously or unknowingly in our daily lives when we are confronted with all kinds of issues, positive or negative.

Some regard this intuitive contact as a conversation with our inner voice or strength, which guides us in our decision making, particularly when we have nowhere else to turn to.

All of us have this self-talk gift and invoking it is vital to able to constantly be in touch with this talent for our well-being and others.

But one needs to examine these signals because they are often known to be negative.

I write this weeks column following a request from a reader in Penang on how she can tap her inner strength for happiness, prosperity and peace of mind.

The power of the inner energy, which is within every individual, is that it can stimulate our consciousness and also show an individual what is right and what is wrong.

How to be happy: Be more active to feel better about ageing

They will also be more relevant in terms of spending power, which means that advertisers are going to have to start identifying positive aspects of this ever-growing group. This will be a good thing as currently we know that older age is largely associated with negative attributes, which presents an unbalanced view.

Step 2: Research shows that most adults over 65 are very healthy, and physical deterioration can be ameliorated quite dramatically with a healthy diet and physical exercise. Research also confirms that cognitive functioning does not decline as rapidly as first thought and that older brains are still capable of forming new neuronal networks, so one way to stay youthful is to keep learning. An active sex life is also important for maintaining youthfulness.

Step 3: The things we can do to age healthily are to stop smoking by the age of 45, drink alcohol moderately, maintain a healthy weight and healthy relationships, exercise, have a mature outlook on life and keep learning.

Problems With Do-Gooder Self-Improvement Types Making Society Weak

There are so many self-improvement types and psychologists working on helping people get through their problems and their concern in life. Many of these psychologists and self-improvement consultants write articles and the give advice, and a large number of of them a mean well. Unfortunately a lot of what I see it is there are various problems with these types of do-gooder self-improvement types as properties are making society weak.

If someone has psychological issues or tremendous stress in their livlihood then properties fancy to direction that energy and those matters and do something around it. However, going throughout old childhood memories and trying to psychoanalyze every single event in someones life is purely silly. People need to take responsibility for their actions and situation with their hardships and prevent complaining and making excuses.

Too many do-gooder self-improvement sorts allow folks excuse themselves out of things to try to make them feel comfortable even when properties failed to perform a duty or made favorably on a responsibility. There is no excuse for failure, no excuse for piss poor performance in any of lives many endeavors.

It would seem to me that self-improvement sorts really want to help the people who properties are consulting with then they would notify them to be more responsible for the actions, honor their commitments and stop acting fancy this kind of a crybaby. But if properties did this I suppose the people would be cured and not need them anymore?

I don't like self-improvement psychologists when of the bad advice they give to people who are already weak when too often right now advice causes them weaker. But then again, I do like weakness nevertheless and I think weak people are of no value as they do not try, they make excuses and everything is always suddenly someone elses fault. Who needs them, they don't do anything. Now then, how can we service the self-help experts? Consider presently in 2006.

I have been reading The Secret, a book which has sold a zillion copies and which purports to tell me how I can make myself have absolutely anything I want.

At first, I was extremely excited and highly motivated by this possibility. And I have been eagerly and religiously affirming and visualising and intending my perfect life. The only problem is, whenever I sit down to do my visualising, I change my mind about what I want to manifest. Some days, I have a huge house in Sandymount, and one in Hampstead and one in New York, overlooking the park, but then, some days I decide I want to live a simple, eco-friendly life in a log cabin in California with a bunch of hippies. To the outside observer, these problems are only the normal problems that any multi-billionaire in my position would be faced with.

The Art of Acceptance

The concluding goal for any endeavor in self improvement is to gain a clearer understanding of your own potential. Through the insights gained with self assessment a picture begins to form which suggests the things of that potential. Who you will become begins to take shape in your mind, but among such new found insight, obstacles become apparent, behaviours and actions which have not served to help you on your way to improvement.

When you begin a process of self assessment and self analysis it can be difficult to confront certain aspects of our personalities. The measure of battling through ingrained thought processes, learned behaviours, and counter productive reactions to situation can seem overwhelming. It is important to come to terms providing the elements of our personality that are unhealthy and obstructive to the development of our real selves. These counter productive elements if not be considered as faults or negative traits, properties are how they are, and most notably they are obstructions to a deeper understanding of our real natures.

The nurturing and growth of the real self is a process and should viewed as such. As we become a multitude of self up to date we can boost to become more accepting of the non intuitive components of our behaviours and thoughts. With awareness comes responsibility, responsibility to deal with the challenges posed by the improvement of the inner self.

The acceptance of non-productive aspects of personality should be applied to others as well. We are all fallible and have setbacks, perfection is not an attainable goal, understanding and improvement are goals. Treat others to the same level of acceptance as you allow for yourself. Know that not anyone shares your commitment to a deeper spiritual bargain and not everyone is on the path towards discovery.

Docs keep the faith

Well, doctors do believe in God and some don't mind infusing a dose of spirituality into their sessions at the clinic. Like Dr Vinod Kumar Nigam, a general and laparoscopic surgeon, who is writing a book 40 Minutes With God, where he talks about the time he spends praying for his patients while on the treadmill.

Currently at the Apollo Hospital, Gurgaon, he encountered the power of prayer early in his career of over 30 years. “There was a patient who was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour. When she found out, she simply asked me for a photograph of the malignant organ and assured me that she would knock down the tumour and she did, simply through prayer and the power of positive thinking. She went on to live for years, defying the prognosis of a couple of months."

Adds Dr Nigam, “We all know about the feel good hormones like serotonin and pheromones that are secreted in the body when we exercise or experience happiness and positive emotions.

Religion: Thinking vs. feeling

Not thinking. Thinking, even atheistic thinking, can lead to belief, because thinking is the province of logos, the Word. And so, this caught my eye. A few weeks ago, we blogged on the Templeton Foundation's posing of the question, "Does science make belief in God obsolete?" This article from The American examines the answer of one physicist and Christian who answered the question with "Absolutely not!" But I'm not sure the rest of his answer is satisfying. His name is William D. Phillips, a professor at the University of Maryland and a Nobel Laureate in physics.

Phillips, himself a scientist and a practicing Christian who talks openly about his faith, wrote in his essay that "a scientist can believe in God because such belief is not a scientific matter." […] Phillips said that examining belief in God from a scientific vantage point was the wrong approach, since one cannot measure God scientifically.

Those Embarrassing Body Problems

But wouldn't you know it, just when you want to project an image of cool confidence, "body central" has other ideas.

"There are some people who actually have a problem with overactive sweat glands, but for the most part, excessive sweating that occurs only in certain situations is all about stress," says Siegel.

A by-product of stress hormones such as cortisol, epinephrine, and norepinephrine, Siegel says nervous sweating is a reflection of sympathetic nerve discharge - a manifestation of the fight-or-flight response that kicks in when we're anxious.

The way to prevent it, he says, is to condition ourselves ahead of time for facing stressful situations. "It's a matter of brain retraining. Gradually expose yourself to the nervous situation, and eventually your body won't respond as if you're in danger."

An easier way to prevent excessive sweating is simply to try an antiperspirant deodorant, Siegel says.

It's also the subject of my new book, Urawaza: Secret Everyday Tips and Tricks from Japan. Keep reading for excerpts on how to silence a crying baby, get rid of splinters, swim backward, make grass greener, and easily clean up egg yolk... all using common household objects.

1. How to make a baby stop crying Dilemma: Sure, the baby's cute. But why won't he stop crying? Solution: The secret to stop a crying baby lies in making the sound you produce during the mouthfeel stage of wine tasting. Why this works: When babies are still in the womb, the noises they can hear are limited to those in the 6000-8000mHz range. The sound you make when you slosh the liquid behind your lips during wine tasting takes place at about 7000mHz, reminding the baby of a time when the world around was peaceful and the whirs and stirs inside Mommy's tummy soothed him back to a sleepy state.

With smoking, motivation is key

Motivation is the basis for taking action or making a decision. Motivation is an influence, an incentive, the stimulus for change. On Tuesday, the tax on cigarettes in New York state will increase by an additional $1.25, making the tax on a pack of cigarettes $2.75. The increase in the price of cigarettes will motivate people to quit smoking and motivate children not to start smoking. This tax increase will spur more than 140,000 New Yorkers to quit for good, prevent more than 230,000 children from smoking, save more than 37,000 New Yorkers from smoking-related deaths and produce more than $5 billion in long-term health care savings for taxpayers. If you are ready to quit smoking, there are resources to help. Quitting smoking is a process, and a good plan is part of the process. Set a quit date: This is the day you will be tobacco-free.

Small experiences fill a well of motivation to tap into at

During my running career I have looked for inspiration and motivation from many sources. Initially, I looked to stories about incredible bravery and overcoming adversity to achieve monumental goals. My inspiration has changed over time. Chance encounters and day to day examples of inspiration have led me to look at the smaller view rather than the big picture.

In 1997 I ran my first marathon in Chicago. Coincidentally, Khalid Khannouchi, one of the greatest modern marathoners, also finished his first marathon that day just 20 seconds slower than the world record. A few years later, when he was the reigning world record holder, I stood in line at the New York Marathon expo to get his autograph. I mentioned to him that Chicago had been my first marathon too. His face was suddenly animated and he excitedly exclaimed how much he loved that first marathon and that it is a special race for him.
